Overfalls Foundation offers children’s program July 17

July 14, 2019

The mission of the Overfalls Foundation is to collect, preserve and teach the maritime history of the Delmarva region.

The foundation is excited to announce that the second in the 2019 series of summer programs for children ages 6-12 and their parents will be held Wednesday, July 17, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Lightship Overfalls on the canal in Lewes.  There will be two sessions, 9 to 10:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., allowing up to 10 children in each.

Attendees will have an intimate opportunity to explore the Lightship Overfalls and learn more about the history of lightships and the life and challenges of the sailors who served aboard them. Lightships and their crews played a vital role in the safety and success of marine travel and commerce over the past two centuries.

This month’s program will feature the language of signal flags. There will be games and fun while learning how the sailors used this “Flag Alphabet” to communicate with other vessels that might be nearby. A highlight will be a special craft using the flags to create a wooden plaque to take home. Parents as well as their children are invited to participate.

The hope is that these classes will stimulate further interest in learning more about the region’s history and the value of preserving this story for the future.

The cost of these workshops is $5 per participant. Each student must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, or to register, go to www.overfalls.org and use the “contact us” button.
