Pa. woman dies following bike crash near Plantation Road

June 18, 2021

A 19-year-old Pennsylvania woman died June 18 after a crash a day earlier near Plantation Road.

The crash happened about 5:30 p.m. on June 17 when a Georgetown man was driving a 2006 Ford F-250 pickup truck towing a dual axle dump trailer, traveling westbound on Shady Road approaching the intersection of Plantation Road with a green light. At the same time, Madison Cunningham, 19, of Douglasville, Pa., was riding a bicycle westbound on Shady Road in the designated bike lane.

As the pickup truck started to proceed through the intersection, it collided with Cunningham within the middle of the intersection. As a result of the impact, Cunningham was knocked to the ground. She was flown to an area hospital in critical condition, and died June 18.

The truck came to a controlled stop west of the intersection in the Henlopen Landing neighborhood. The driver of the truck was not injured.

The roadway was closed for about an hour and a half as the accident was investigated and the roadway was cleared.
