Pedestrian crash closes Route 1 northbound near Lewes

February 21, 2020

A man was killed Feb. 20 on Route 1 near Lewes after walking into traffic.

The man was crossing Route 1 south of Route 9 at 6:15 p.m. going east when he crossed the median and walked in front of a 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe going northbound on Route 1, said Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe of the Delaware State Police.

The man was wearing dark clothing and not using a light, Jaffe said, and the driver, 50, from Camden, did not see the man in the left travel lane.

The driver of the Tahoe remained at the scene; the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of next of kin, Jaffe said.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.

Route 1 northbound in the area of Route 9 was closed for about three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
