A 54-year-old Milford woman was killed after she was hit by a car while running across Route 1 near Frederica Oct. 21.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight when the woman, later identified as Patricia L. Jones, was running in a northeast direction across the southbound lanes of Route 1, just north of S. Frederica Road, said Master Cpl. Michael Austin of the Delaware State Police.
Jones ran directly into the path of a 2004 Nissan Altima driving south in the right lane on Route 1, Austin said.
The 33-year-old Milford man driving the Nissan swerved to the left to avoid a collision, but the front right bumper of the car hit the woman, throwing her into the southbound left lane, where she was then hit by a tractor-trailer.
Jones was pronounced dead at the scene, Austin said.
The tractor-trailer continued southbound without stopping, while the Nissan came to a controlled stop in the median south of the crash. The Nissan’s driver was uninjured in the crash.
Austin said Jones was wearing dark clothing with no reflectors, and was not carrying a light.
Route 1 southbound in the area of S. Frederica Road was closed for about five hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
The state police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing an investigation. Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call Master Cpl. J. Lane at 302-698-8457.
