Peggy-Lynne ‘Lynne’ Cardwell, involved in community

June 14, 2021

It is with great sadness that the family of Peggy-Lynne Cardwell of Lewes announces her passing Friday, May 28, 2021. She was a loving wife, mother of three children, grandmother of five children, and great-grandmother of two.

Lynne was born in New Rochelle, N.Y., Sept. 3, 1937. She attended Katharine Gibbs secretarial school working as an administrative assistant where she graduated in 1957. On Sept. 21, 1957, she married John Clement Cardwell.  Together they raised three daughters, Elizabeth Ann, Lee Diane and Ellyn Celeste.  She resided in Murrysville, Pa., for 35 years and then relocated to Lewes for 18 years.

Her desire to help others kept her active and involved in a variety of local organizations. She was a volunteer in the Murrysville Meals on Wheels program, and she worked together with her husband to build St. Alban’s Church in Murrysville. She was also very involved in supporting her three daughters’ school, sporting and other activities.  She had a large circle of beloved friends and would organize group activities for all to join. She adored her book group, theater and movie group, and her community of friends she found in her Cape Shores neighborhood of Lewes. She was a lifelong Steelers fan, enjoyed listening to baseball games on the radio, playing games and preparing wonderful family meals. More than anything, Lynne loved her family and the time she spent with them having fun at the beach.

Lynne is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, John; her daughter Betsie Baer of Centreville, Md., her daughter Lee (Jeff) Baker of Seattle, Wash.; along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her much-loved daughter Ellyn (David) Dickson of Salisbury, Md.

A private family gathering was held on Memorial Day at the Lewes home. Lewes friends plan to celebrate her memory in the near future.

At Lynne’s request, donations in her memory can be made to Compass Hospice, 160 Coursevall Dr., Centreville, MD 21617.
