Pennsylvania man dies in Route 24 crash

November 16, 2021

A Pennsylvania man died Nov. 16 after a two-car crash on Route 24 near Mulberry Knoll Road.

The crash happened about 8:58 a.m. when Julio D. Mendoza-Carcamo, 37, of Port Royal, Pa., was driving a 2015 Chrysler 200 westbound on Route 24 approaching the intersection of Mulberry Knoll Road when he drove onto the westbound shoulder, striking several traffic barrels before reentering the roadway and crossing into the eastbound lane directly in the path of a 2005 Cadillac Escalade driven by a 42-year-old Salisbury, Md. man, said Master Cpl. Heather Pepper of the Delaware State Police.

In an attempt to avoid a collision, Pepper said, the Cadillac driver swerved slightly right; however, the front center of the Chrysler struck the front left of the Cadillac within the eastbound lane in a near head-on collision. The Chrysler rotated clockwise before coming to a stop in the westbound lane, she said, and the Cadillac was forced off the roadway, coming to a stop in an open farm field.

As a result of the crash, Route 24 between Plantation Road and Mulberry Knoll Road was closed for about 2 1/2 hours. Pepper said several people told police they saw the Chrylser driving erratically on Route 1, even going the wrong way, before turning onto Route 24.

Mendoza-Carcamo was not properly restrained and was transported by EMS to Beebe Healthcare where he was pronounced dead. The 42-year-old Cadillac Escalade operator was properly restrained and did not report any injuries.
