At an age in life when most people are thinking about spending their days making footprints in the sand, Al and Linda Abrams are instead expanding their business footprint in Rehoboth Beach.

Owners of Sea Finds for over a decade, the couple have recently opened Penny Lane Lighting on Rehoboth Avenue. Both retired from long careers with AstraZeneca, Linda said she enjoys meeting people and it’s good for Al to be able to get out of the house.

“It’s not for the faint of heart,” said Linda. “But if you have that entrepreneurial spirit, it doesn’t ever quite leave you.”

Linda said Penny Lane Lighting fills a void in Rehoboth - a store focused almost exclusively on lighting. There’s a lot of new building and remodeling going on right now, so the couple thought it was a good idea, she said.

Linda said the store offers a wide variety of lighting options - from high-end table and floor lamps to less expensive lamps that could be used to decorate a rental house.

Penny Lane Lighting has a wide selection of indoor and outdoor lamps. Linda said some of the lamps are the same design, but made with different components to bring indoor and outdoor spaces together. She said one of the most popular designs so far takes handmade vases from Thailand and transforms them into lamps.

Linda said the store offers lighthouse lamps in three-, four- and five-foot designs. She said there’s also popular himalayan salt lamps and a large selection of night lights.

In addition to all the lighting options, Linda said the wall space at Penny Lane Lighting affords the display of artwork that can’t be sold in Sea Finds.

“We own the two businesses, but they have very different vibes,” she said. “This place lights up like a little jewel at night.”

Through the summer, hours of operation are scheduled to be 3 to 9 p.m., seven days a week, but because of COVID-19, sometimes staffing is an issue.

“We hate missing out on business, but the good thing is that someone is either at Penny Lane Lighting or in Sea Finds at the Wilmington Avenue end of Penny Lane Mall,” said Linda, adding the plan is to be open year-round.

Penny Lane Lighting is located in Unit 1 of Penny Lane Mall, off Rehoboth Avenue. For more information call 302-379-4695.
