Performance Insights talks to precede Coastal Concerts shows

November 18, 2019

Coastal Concerts board member Lani Spahr, a professional musician and master audio engineer, will bring his wealth of musical knowledge and experience to present Performance Insights before three of this season’s performances. The half-hour talks are designed to enhance the audience experience as well as to entertain and educate.

Spahr is a longtime professional oboist, accomplished bagpiper, internationally renowned audio recording engineer, astute music producer, and knowledgeable commentator on all aspects of classical music.

Employing audio and visual elements, Spahr will offer insights into various facets of the concert focusing on the composers, the works being presented and the historical context, to provide the audience with a broadened musical perspective.

Spahr has been widely recognized for his remarkable audio remastering of Edward Elgar’s “Symphony #1,” which was issued, along with a number of other Elgar pieces he also remastered, on four discs in boxed set #2614 under the SOMM label in 2016. This project took Spahr a painstaking two years of meticulous digitizing, matching, enhancing, coordinating, synthesizing and synchronizing the music from the original 78 rpm test pressings from 1928 and 1934, obtained from Elgar’s personal collection. His comprehensive album liner notes are filled with insights into his analytical processes and observations, both technical and musical.

For the 2019-20 season, the Performance Insights discussions will take place at 1 p.m., preceding the Benjamin Hochman piano concert Saturday, Nov. 16; the Tom Gallant oboe and Tesla String Quartet concert Saturday, Jan. 18; and the Trio Valtorna concert, Saturday, Feb. 15. Admission to Performance Insights is included with purchased tickets.

General seating tickets are still available for $35.
