Planning underway for Wings & Wheels Oct. 4-5

June 29, 2019

Wings & Wheels is set to take place Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4 and 5, in Georgetown. Pathways to Aviation Day will kick things off Friday when 125 high school students will spend the day at the airport learning from aviation experts at the Delaware Coastal Airport.

Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Charles McGee will be in attendance as an honored guest for Wings & Wheels. McGee is a member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen (332nd Fighter Group); he was a fighter pilot during WWII, Korea and Vietnam, and flew 409 combat missions, more than any other Air Force fighter pilot. He is a recipient of the Bronze Star, Distinguished Flying Cross and Legion of Merit. He flew a P51 Mustang escorting bombers over Germany, Austria and the Balkans. Later he became an instructor for the B25 Mitchell bomber, with more than 6,300 flying hours. Being at Wings & Wheels will put him back with the two aircraft he is most familiar with – the B-25 Mitchell bomber Panchito, owned by Larry Kelley and the Delaware Aviation Museum, and the P-51 Mustang Rosalie, owned by Ezra Rickards.

McGee will be the keynote speaker at the Pathways to Aviation program for high school students, for the Friday night dinner show, and on the runway at the Panchito booth on Saturday.

Attendees will celebrate all things peace, love and happiness at the annual fundraising dinner with Kathie Martin’s Tribute to the Woodstock Generation Friday. Benefitting the Delaware Aviation Museum Foundation and the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce, this year’s event will be held on the Delaware Coastal Airport grounds. Ticket price is $50 per person and includes dinner from Lighthouse Catering.

Saturday’s free event begins at 10 a.m. with an opening cermony, including the national anthem and Presentation of Colors by the Sussex Central JROTC Color Guard. Events at the airport throughout the day include a vintage aircraft fly-in, car show, featured speakers, live entertainment, and craft and food vendors. 2019 will also see the return of the fan-favorite Flour Bombing Competition at 2 p.m. as well as the the official Naval Academy Parachute Team.

The Historical Vintage Car Club of Delaware be partners for the 2019 car show, offering awards in numerous categories, goodie bags for all preregistered vehicles, and dash plaques for the first 200 registrants. The show is expected to sell out, so registering vehicles soon is recommended.

For vendor or car show registration information, or to purchase tickets for the Friday night event,  go to www.wings-wheels.com or call the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce at 302-856-1544.
