Plein air oil painting class set June 2-3 at Rehoboth Art League

May 27, 2020

With the Phase I opening of Delaware, the Rehoboth Art League will offer Plein Air Oil Painting: Color and Composition with Jacalyn Beam from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday, June 2 and 3, on its outdoor campus. “En plein air” is a French expression meaning "in the open air,” and it refers to the act of painting outdoors with the artist's subject in full view. Plein air artists capture the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject by incorporating natural light, color and movement into their works. Since the class will be held outdoors and class size maintained at less than 10, social distancing will be easily accomplished. All other CDC guidelines will also be strictly adhered to, especially wearing face masks at all times.

In this class for intermediate and advanced painters, participants will discuss and practice seeing shapes and color in the landscape. Attention will be given to the what and why of subject matter and how to move the answers to canvas. Color temperature will be discussed and explored as a means to support artistic goals. Need supplies? No worries; Jerry's Art Supply will have everything needed on site! Purchase directly from Jerry's or bring own supplies. For a list of supplies, email paula@rehobothartleague.org. The cost for the class is $200 per person.

Jacalyn Beam was born in Chester County, Pa. Her early training in art was rooted in the history and beauty of the Brandywine Valley. She holds BS, MEd and EdD degrees, and has always had a passion for painting. Beam is a member of the American Impressionist Society, Oil Painters of America, Washington Society of Landscape Artists, American Women Artists, and the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association. She is included in books, magazines and other documents including, "100 Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters" published by Schiffer, and has earned many awards. Gov. John Carney recently appointed Beam to serve on the state's art council for a three-year term beginning January 2020.

Registration is required for all classes. To register, go to www.rehobothartleague.org, email paula@rehobothartleague.org or call 302-227-8408, Ext. 112. All classes are held at the Rehoboth Art League, located at 12 Dodds Lane in Henlopen Acres.
