Police: Boy, 14, calls in bomb threat during Millsboro Middle dance

May 19, 2018

A 14-year-old boy was charged May 18 with calling in a bomb threat during a dance at a local middle school.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:02 p.m. during an 8th-grade formal dance at Millsboro Middle School at 302 E. State Street, Millsboro, said Master Cpl. Michael Austin of the Delaware State Police.

A male caller sent several 911 calls to the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center saying there was a bomb in the school, Austin said. A school resource officer was on site at the dance, and the dance was evacuated with the assistance of Millsboro and Dagsboro police.

A K-9 search of the school determined that there was no explosive device, Austin said.

Investigators traced the phone call to an Oak Orchard address; police responded to the home and contacted a 14-year-old boy who made the 911 calls, Austin said.

The boy was taken to Delaware State Police Troop 4 where he was charged with one count of terroristic threatening. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 3 and released to his parents on $1,000 unsecured bail, pending an appearance in Family Court.
