A 68-year-old West Virginia man died Aug. 27 while fishing west of the Indian River inlet.
The incident occurred about 4:20 p.m. when Donald M. Cutsail Jr., his wife and granddaughter were fishing west of the Indian River Inlet, south of the South Shore Marina in their boat, said Senior Cpl. Heather Pepper. When Cutsail saw that his fishing line was caught in the boat’s motor, Pepper said, he jumped in the water to untangle the line. Cutsail tried to climb the ladder back onto the boat, but he fell backward into the water and was unable to swim because of rough water conditions and strong current.
Passing boaters pulled Cutsail from the water onto their boat, and began lifesaving measures before he was transferred to a Coast Guard boat and transported back to shore. He was then transported from the scene to an area hospital by ambulance.
Cutsail was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Delaware Fish and Wildlife Natural Resources Police are investigating the boating accident.
