Poly’s fourth-quarter power surge lights up Cape girls 53-50

Vikings now tied in Northern Division with Sussex Central
January 30, 2019

The Cape girls’ basketball team scored 50 points in consecutive home games over three days with inside player Abbey Hearn scoring most of the points for the Vikings.

Cape lost to St. Elizabeth 59-50 Jan. 26 led by Hearn’s 25 points. Then Jan. 29, the Vikings fell to Polytech 53-50 behind Hearn’s 24 points.

Cape has discovered the formula for almost winning big games.

The Vikings led an athletic Panthers team 36-31 after three quarters at the Big House, but they were outscored 22-14 in the final period en route to their second straight loss.

Courtney Turner was the top scorer for Poly, netting 19 points in the game.

Yaa Asantewa Afriyie and Diamond Hendricks each scored a dozen for the Panthers.

Dania Cannon backed up Hearn’s point production with 11 points.

Turner was happy but not surprised to knock down such a big win at the Big House.

“We have a good team, and we’ve been playing better every game,” Turner said. “We feel we can play with anyone. We lost to Cape by two the first time we played, and we felt we should have won that game.”

Cape dropped to 11-3 overall with two losses in the Northern Division of the Henlopen Conference.

Sussex Central is tied with Cape with two division losses, each losing to the other and to Polytech.

Sussex Tech has three division losses, having lost to Cape, Central and Polytech.

The surging Panthers have four losses in the division.

Down 48-45 with 1:23 on the clock, Poly had possession, but Cape came back to tie the game at 50-50 with 38 seconds left to play.

But a Cape player reached and stepped over the end line, smacking at the basketball, resulting in a two-shot foul (intentional) and possession. The Panthers made a free throw and converted a miss into a basket. A last-second three-point shot by Mehkia Applewhite was close but no good.

Cape is scheduled to host Caesar Rodney at 6:15 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 31.
