Portions of Fowler Beach closed through Oct. 1

Protections in place for beach-nesting season
March 4, 2021

Portions of the Fowler Beach area of Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge encompassing the bay beach, dunes and back-barrier portions closed March 1 for the benefit of federally and state-protected beach-nesting and migratory shorebirds, including red knot, piping plover, oystercatcher, least tern and other species.

When exploring Prime Hook NWR beaches during beach-nesting bird season, visitors are reminded to obey all posted signs and barriers. Dog walking is prohibited.

These areas are subject to change and/or modification at any time.

The beach nesting habitat will reopen Friday, Oct. 1, for full use by wildlife dependent visitors. Prime Hook is a carry-in/carry-out national wildlife refuge. Guests must take all their trash with them, including fishing line, which can be a hazard to wildlife.

For more information, call 302-684-8419 or go to fws.gov/refuge/Prime_Hook. Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge is located off Route 16 near Broadkill Beach at 11978 Turkle Pond Road, Milton.
