Prime Hook Wildlife Refuge announces fall events starting Sept. 24

September 20, 2018

Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge will sponsor a variety of events this fall including lectures and birding field trips. For a complete schedule, go to www.fws.gov/refuge/prime_hook. If preregistration is required, call the refuge office at 302-684-8419. Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge is at 11978 Turkle Pond Road, Milton.

Birding field trips at the refuge will be held from 8 to 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 24; Thursday, Oct. 18; Friday, Nov. 16; and Wednesday, Dec. 12. Led by volunteer birding guides, beginner and experienced bird watchers will enjoy observing and learning about the bird species frequenting the refuge at this time of year. Participants should come prepared for the weather and expect to walk up to a mile. Bring binoculars, a field guide, and spotting scope; the leader will have spotting scopes also. Binoculars will be available to borrow. Meet at the refuge office. Trips are free, open to the public, and last approximately three hours. Preregistration is required.

An Evening at the Hook Lecture Series session on Insects of Delmarva will take place from 7 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the Milton CHEER Center, 24855 Broadkill Road, two miles west of Route 1 on Route 16. Dennis Bartow has been collecting bugs for 50 years and will tell attendees about some of his favorites. Some of his rarest finds are housed at the Smithsonian. Reservations are no longer required for An Evening at the Hook since the CHEER Center has more seating space than the previous venue.
