Program fosters kindergarteners’ love of reading

October 16, 2019

Worcester Preparatory School educators know that in order to grow their students into confident readers, they need to create an environment that fosters the love of reading.

Kindergarten teachers Kelley Burton and Heather Dennis have incorporated a new program titled Read to Self, where students have a carved-out time every day simply dedicated to reading. During this quiet time, kindergarteners select books of their choice and then find a cozy spot to nestle and read to themselves.

As emergent readers, they may read beginner-level books or even make up stories from what they see in the pictures, but any time spent with a book at this age proves to have great rewards.

In just one month, the kindergarteners have learned to love this allocated time of reading. One student said, "Read to Self is just as fun as recess!"
