Protesters line Route 1

July 22, 2019

Close to 100 protesters lined Route 1 between iHOP and the Exxon station July 4 protesting the government’s policy of separating children from their families, and detaining the children of illegal immigrants and asylum seekers.

The event, called Stand for the Human Rights of Asylum Seekers and Immigrants, was organized by the Progressive Democrats of Sussex County.

“I am here because of the current U.S. government policy that is dehumanizing victims of poverty and violence,” said event organizer Joanne Cabry, chair of the Progressive Democrats of Sussex County. “We have detention camps throughout this country where we are holding civilians who are convicted of no crimes but are there purely because of the policy of the U.S. government. That’s why I am here.”
