As soon as Brandywine Valley SPCA’s vans arrived from Wilmington Oct. 15, their cargo began talking.

Cat carrier upon cat carrier was unloaded from the vans as Brandywine Valley SPCA veterinary personnel began sorting out 100 cats that arrived at the organization’s new rescue and rehabilitation center off Shingle Point Road.

The cats were transported from Florida after being evacuated from shelters affected by Hurricane Michael. Walter Fenstermacher, director of Brandywine Valley SPCA in Delaware, said many of the cats had passed through the Jacksonville Humane Society, which had taken in many cats from shelters hit by the storm.

The cats range in age from 2 months to 10 years. Staff separated them by sex, whether the cat has been spayed or neutered and if the cat has any issues identified by other shelters.

Fenstermacher said the cats will spend about a week or so at the rescue and rehabilitation center to ensure the animals are healthy, vaccinated, and spayed or neutered. From there, many will be posted for adoption at Brandywine Valley’s adoption center on Route 113 in Georgetown, while others will go to other shelters, Fenstermacher said.
