Race for the Ribbon raises $25,000

Arden MacPhee’s story and smile steal the hearts of everyone
July 18, 2018

Arden MacPhee rhymes with cancer-free and the 5-year-old, who just graduated from kindergarten, gave 410 runners at the Race for the Ribbon 5K a reason to believe that anything is possible July 14 at the Rehoboth Boardwalk and Wilmington Avenue.

Arden had a cancerous kidney removed when she was just 14 months old, and last year, a cancerous growth was removed from her remaining kidney. Her mom, Tracy Sullivan, described the last surgery as high-tech and miraculous, adding that doctors had declared Arden cancer-free.

The precocious kid with the perpetual smile obviously enjoyed all the pre-race conviviality, beginning with Logan Shuttleworth singing the national anthem, then Arden being the honorary starter for the race before being hoisted on her daddy’s shoulders to circle the 5K course with the rest of the throng.

Austen Cave, 17, entering his senior year at Delmar, was the overall winner in 15:35. Austen is looking to run next year at either Salisbury University or Frostburg State University. He also plays lacrosse.
