Rain storm consumes the 41st annual powwow

September 19, 2018
For the first time in 41 years, the Nanticoke Indian Powwow was rained out all weekend, Sept. 8-9 this year.  “It was the hardest, and yet best decision to make, keeping in mind, safety for everyone,”  said Chief Natosha Carmine.

The theme of the powwow was Water Is Life, and Mother Nature reinforced that statement in a big way. After weeks of diligent preparation of the grounds by volunteers, including members of the tribe, along with families and friends, the skies opened up minutes before the scheduled Grand Entry. Vendors remained open for the people who braved the downpour to visit and purchase items at the shops. “We are disappointed we had to cancel powwow this year,” said Carmine, “However we recognize how blessed we have been over the many years to have some of the best weather weekends for our powwows.”

The tribal council extends an invitation to everyone to purchase T-shirts, hats and powwow books. Raffle tickets for the handmade T-shirt quilt and hand carved flute will be on sale until the winning ticket is drawn at 3 p.m. during Native American Day scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3.  The Nanticoke Indian Museum is located at 27073 John J. Williams Highway, in Millsboro, open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.
