After more than a decade of work, the husband-and-wife team of Ray Sander, board president, and Sheryl Swed, executive director, have officially stepped away from their leadership roles with Delaware Botanic Gardens. The gardens’ annual dinner, held Sept. 24, served as a send-off for the Bethany Beach couple and an opportunity to introduce new leadership.
Sander and Swed have been the public faces and driving force behind the continued growth of the gardens.
Among their accomplishments was convincing world-renowned Dutch landscape architect Piet Oudolf to oversee the design and construction of a 2-acre Meadow Garden with 100,000 native plants.
Sander said Oudolf was congratulatory about their pending retirement and offered words of encouragement, telling them, "Now, the two of you will be able to look at the gardens with a different set of eyes."
Following the valedictory remarks, the Delaware Botanic Gardens at Pepper Creek announced its new leadership team. The new co-chairs of the board are Mark Chura of Lewes and Carol Zonko of Fenwick Island. The new executive director is Mark Carter of Milton.
