RD20 Democratic Committee speaks out

January 15, 2021

Our nation’s voters chose Biden-Harris over Trump-Pence in a legitimate democratic election last November. Jan. 6, 2021, will live in infamy for the violent attempt of domestic terrorists to stop the work of our democracy. Fortunately, it failed, as shown by our congressional lawmakers who returned to the Senate and House floors to certify Joe Biden’s electoral victory in a bipartisan vote. Several Republican senators who had previously objected to the certification changed their minds after a mob of President Trump’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol.

Based on the video of his speech to the protesters earlier the same day, President Trump clearly bears direct responsibility for the insurrection that saw Capitol windows smashed, halls of Congress stormed, lawmakers’ offices vandalized, and several deaths, including the murder of a Capitol police officer, Brian Sicknick. Calls to immediately remove President Trump from office, including those from Delaware’s congressional delegation, Sen. Tom Carper, Sen. Chris Coons and U.S. Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, are warranted, as he is a clear and present danger to this country.

Our democracy and the will of the people have prevailed. Despite the disgraceful and illegal actions of the president and pro-Trump mob, there will be a peaceful transfer of presidential power on Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, just as there has been for two centuries.
