Reading and conversation with author Karen Dukess Nov. 15

Free and open to the public, but RSVPs are required

The Rehoboth Beach Writers’ Guild, in partnership with Browseabout Books, will host a special reading and conversation with newly published author Karen Dukess at 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 15, in the upstairs room of Nicola Pizza on Rehoboth Avenue.

Doors will open at 5 p.m. for those who wish to order food and drinks, and socialize before the event.

Dukess’s debut novel is “The Last Book Party,” a coming-of-age story set in the New York literary scene of the 1980s.

Admission is free and open to the public, but RSVPs are required.

Maribeth Fischer, executive director of the Rehoboth Beach Writers’ Guild, said, “I was looking for a good book to take with me on a weekend trip to New York, and Susan Kehoe, the managing partner at Browseabout Books, literally put it in my hands and said ‘Try this.’ I could go on and on about the importance of good booksellers here, but suffice it to say, the book was a perfect choice. Light-hearted and literary – basically a fun, enjoyable weekend read.”

Fischer said upon finishing the book, she saw on the acknowledgment page that Dukess’s agent was Doug Stewart, a man who had attended a writers conference Fischer used to run in Rehoboth. “I sent him an email, congratulating him on the book’s success and telling him that if Dukess were ever nearby on a book tour, I’d love have her do a reading and talk for us. Susan Kehoe jumped in to help make that happen, and voila! Here she is.”

Fischer says she was intrigued because, although Dukess has a journalism degree, has written book reviews and has blogged about raising sons, she has spent the last decade as a speechwriter on gender equality for the United Nations Development Programme.

Fischer said, “Many of us, often in retirement, are turning to writing and art after years of working in other careers.”
