Rehoboth historian pens article on Lorenzo Dow Martin

December 8, 2021

The Lewes Historical Society recently published the 2021 edition of its journal, Lewes History.

The volume includes an article authored by Rehoboth historian Paul Lovett that discusses Lorenzo Dow Martin, the person who sold the farm that would become the heart of Rehoboth’s commercial district.

This narrative about Dow Martin’s life is, in essence, the story of the founding of Rehoboth. The Dow Martin farmhouse, now over 200 years old, still exists on Christian Street in Rehoboth. In the coming months, his farmhouse will be modeled and positioned on Lovett’s diorama of Railroad Era Rehoboth Avenue.

The Lewes History journal is available for $10 at all Lewes Historical Society locations.

Lovett hosts informal gatherings at 9:30 a.m., Wednesdays, in the Rehoboth Beach Main Street building next to the Rehoboth Beach Museum. Each meeting focuses on a unique aspect of Rehoboth history as told through the diorama. All are welcome to reserve a spot, bring coffee and join the conversation. Space is limited. To make a reservation, email paul@pdlovett.com or call 302-893-9391.
