A 40-year-old Rehoboth man was struck and killed about 12:17 a.m., Aug. 11, on Route 1 near Rehoboth as a uniformed state trooper in a Chevy Tahoe police vehicle was responding to a call with lights and siren fully activated. Police say the crash occurred just north of Church Street, as the Tahoe was traveling north in the left lane of Route 1.

Police say Martir Santiago, 40, of Rehoboth Beach, who was not in a crosswalk, entered the highway from the east side, crossed the shoulder and the right lane, and was struck by the front center of the Tahoe as he crossed the left lane. The trooper, who was uninjured, came to a stop in the right lane.

Santiago died at the scene. Police say he did not have a light and was not wearing reflective clothing at the time of the crash.

The trooper, 31, has been employed by Delaware State Police for nine years and is assigned to Troop 7 patrol in Lewes. The trooper has been placed on administrative leave, per divisional policy, police said.
