Rehoboth needs to be more welcoming

September 16, 2022

I enjoy shopping and dining in downtown Rehoboth Beach, especially doing business with Browseabout Books. We are so fortunate as a community to still have a local, independent bookstore. In this day of big-box stores and Amazon, it must be very difficult to keep a small business running. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the City of Rehoboth Beach isn’t a friend to these shops trying to survive.

Recently, I went into town, purchased 30 minutes of parking, went into Browseabout for 10 minutes to purchase a greeting card, came out and found a $30 parking ticket on my windshield. I inadvertently entered my other car’s license number. I tried to explain my error to the parking office (while there was still time remaining on my meter) to no avail. So, I hope the City of Rehoboth Beach appreciates my $30, since I will no longer be shopping in town. So sorry, Browseabout Books.

Unfortunately, this attitude from the city will only hurt our small businesses. City officials, what are you thinking? There are plenty of restaurants on Route 1 with no parking concerns. Amazon books are cheaper.

Finally, I can only imagine how I would feel if I were a visitor to Rehoboth Beach and made this error. It wouldn’t be very welcoming.
