Hurray for longtime and revered city Commissioner Patrick Gossett. He recently wrote this paper to express consternation over the Banana Republic politics surrounding a new water rate structure voted in by Mayor Kuhns and his minions, commissioners Schlosser, Byrne, Coluzzi and Scheffer. Despite widespread citizen questions and concerns, their water-use vision of Rehoboth Beach seems to reward tourist-season-based operations over year-round homeowners, businesses, and even civic institutions like the fire department and the elementary school.
Hurrah, too, for The Cape Gazette for an editorial saying existing height limits - business and residential - should be kept in place. Kuhns and his allies are trying to chip away at height and land-use controls - an assault on the human scale of our community.
Hurrah, too, for several recent writers of letters to this paper who talked of Rehoboth as a “Golden Goose” and even warned of development excesses lowering the property values for existing homeowners.
There is a new term in political analysis called “retribution voting.” It holds that, as most of today’s politicians routinely ignore the wishes of most voters, voters should wait until the next election to hold them accountable by sending them packing. Those of us who care for, and fought to preserve, the unique Golden Goose nature of Rehoboth Beach should keep a close watch, and then express ourselves in the 2020 municipal elections.
Oh, and check out the map of recent cottage and property demolitions in our city on the Cape Gazette website. It appears as though we have been carpet bombed!
