As an educator who has taught English grammar and comprehension for 34 years, I have a problem with a conclusion Melissa Steele stated in “Berry bows out of District 20 debate.” She stated that if elected, Ruby Schaeffer said she would work to repeal Senate Bill 23. Two paragraphs later, she said that Eugene Dvornick agreed and said if elected he would work to amend SB 23. I am sorry, but those are two very different verbs. Since when do repeal and amend have the same meaning? My husband and I did attend the debate. When asked the question about SB 23, Dvornick not only said it should be amended, he added: That is what legislators do. Dvornick did not agree with Schaeffer that the bill should be repealed, as stated in the article. He said it was now a law that could be amended. One cannot amend a bill that has been repealed, so they do not agree.
