Republican primaries in Sussex County Council races

District 4, District 5 elections also have pair of Democrats in the mix
July 13, 2018

Republicans will have primaries in the race for two open seats on Sussex County Council.

Among those filing for the seats are a planning and zoning commissioner and a member of the county board of adjustment.

In District 4, Doug Hudson of Dagsboro, who was appointed to the planning and zoning commission in 2016, will face George Parish of Millsboro, former Sussex County clerk of the peace.

Democrat Paulette Rappa of Millsboro has also filed for the District 4 seat.

In District 5, Kevin Christophel of Laurel will face John Rieley of Millsboro in the Republican primary.

Democrat Ellen Magee of Selbyville, who serves on the county board of adjustment, has also filed for the District 5 seat. Magee, whose term expires in 2019, was appointed to the board in 2017.

Current District 4 Councilman George Cole, R-Ocean View, is stepping down after 32 years on council. He is the third member of his family to serve on county council. His father, Charlie, was elected in 1974, and served until he passed away in 1985. His mother, Kitty Cole, filled out her husband's term followed by George Cole's election in 1986.

District 5 Councilman Rob Arlett, R-Selbyville, will not seek re-election and has filed to run for U.S. Senate. Arlett was elected in 2014; his term expires at the end of this year.

Arlett will face Rocky De La Fuente Roque and Eugene Truono in the U.S. Senate Republican primary.

No one filed against the Republican row office incumbents: Sheriff Robert Lee; Recorder of Deeds Scott Dailey; and Register of Wills Cindy Green.

District 4 includes the area around the Inland Bays and around the incorporated areas of Bethany Beach, Dewey Beach, Long Neck, Henlopen Acres, Millville, Ocean View, Oak Orchard and Rehoboth Beach.

District 5 includes southern Sussex County from Fenwick Island and South Bethany west to the Maryland line to Delmar and Laurel and around the incorporated areas of Dagsboro, Frankford, Millsboro, Millville and Selbyville.
