Restore the dignity of our country

October 4, 2019

Charlotte King’s stunningly powerful opinion article published recently must serve as a stark reminder to each of us that our collective silence in the face of the ongoing and tragic human rights violations being perpetrated by our government upon innocent children now separated from their families at our southern border, is tantamount to our complicity in these crimes.

While our Delaware congressional contingent has oft spoken out against this conduct and while they have been joined by many congressional Democrats, that cannot suffice for action.  My wife and I take part in the biweekly and ongoing silent vigil on Savannah Road in Lewes in protest of these depraved acts. Each of us participants feels good about what we are doing, and are heartened by the beeping horns and thumbs-up gestures of passing motorists.

However, we can no longer, as a nation, stand by silently, whether in a protesting vigil or otherwise. Demonstrative action is required. Citizens throughout our county, state and nationally must stand up and forcefully cry out against these crimes, and Congress must act now; not only to end the irreparable abuse and harm to these helpless children but to restore the dignity of our country as a law-abiding and nurturing society.
