Revival House to present ‘Die Hard’ Dec. 20

December 10, 2018

Just in time for the holidays, and its 30th anniversary, “Die Hard’” will come crashing into the Milton Theatre for Revival House Thursday, Dec. 20. Since its 1988 debut, “Die Hard’ has become a staple of action movies, spawning four sequels and turning then-comedic actor Bruce Willis into an action movie star. It’s also a Christmas movie.

Attendees will gather round the big screen, grab a hot chocolate and some popcorn, and get ready for one of the most action-packed Christmas movies of all time.

When off-duty NYPD cop John McClane, played by Willis, attends a Christmas party at a Los Angeles skyscraper, he becomes unwittingly entangled in a heist-turned-hostage situation led by criminal mastermind Hans Gruber, played by Alan Rickman. Throughout the film, McClane engages in a game of cat and mouse with Gruber and his henchmen, all while trying to find a way back to his captive wife.

Based upon the book “Nothing Lasts Forever,” a sequel to Roderick Thorp’s “The Detective,” ‘”Die Hard’ was originally set to star Frank Sinatra as John McClane until he turned down the role. After the role was then offered to and declined by various actors, including Sylvester Stallone and Harrison Ford, Fox ultimately settled on Bruce Willis who at the time was a comedic actor on the television show “Moonlighting.”

In addition to making Willis an action star, “Die Hard” also served as Rickman’s first feature film role as Gruber, recognized as one of the top movie villains of all time.

What makes “Die Hard” a Christmas movie however isn’t just a Christmas party during Christmas Eve, but also the little nods to the holiday peppered throughout. One of the more notable examples happens to be the aftermath of McClane’s first victory, in that he sends a festive message to the bad guys in the form of one goon, a Santa hat and the words, “I have a machine gun. Ho Ho Ho.” It may not be a cheerful sight, but it helps to emphasize the season.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the film begins at 7 p.m. The film is rated R, so those younger than 17 must be accompanied by an adult.
