Ribbon cutting held for Makin' Whoopie Pies

June 23, 2017

The Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce welcomed Makin' Whoopie Pies to the resort community with a ribbon cutting June 16. La Vida Lekker LLC partners Josh Mellinger and Greg Lewis are the owners of the new franchise at 25 Rehoboth Ave. in Rehoboth Beach. Mellinger has been operating two very successful Makin' Whoopie Pies stores in Hershey, Pa., for the past three years, and Lewis retired from the Marine Corps in 2016.

Makin' Whoopie Pies is a franchise specializing in made-to-order whoopie pies. Customers can choose from a variety of whoopie pie shells or freshly baked cookies along with 16 different fillings or six different Turkey Hill ice cream flavors. Shells consist of flavors such as chocolate, red velvet, pumpkin, strawberry, blueberry and many more. Unique filling flavors such as salted caramel, mocha buttercream, orange creamsicle, peanut butter fudge, Irish Cream, mojito and others allow customers to create their own unique whoopie pie. In addition to made-to-order whoopie pies, the Rehoboth Makin' Whoopie Pies store will also offer real fruit smoothies, Cocoa Chillers, Makin' Cocoa and fountain beverages.

According to food historians, Amish women (not wanting to waste anything) would bake these delicious desserts with leftover cake batter and icing, and put them in their farmers’ and kids’ lunchboxes. When they would open their lunchboxes to find these treats, they would shout "Whoopie!" Makin' Whoopie Pies brings that excitement with every whoopie pie created.

"I am excited to be able to bring the Makin' Whoopie Pies experience to Rehoboth Beach," said Josh Mellinger, operating partner of the new store. "I look forward to our customers experiencing the joy of creating their own whoopie pie."
