The candidates’ forum May 3 made it clear to me that Ric Moore is the best choice to lead the city with courage and transparency as Lewes mayor.
Ric demonstrated an in-depth knowledge of the many issues facing the city as well as the past mistakes, and the lack of vision and courage to implement the will of the community. He understands the need for leadership and accountability.
There are many issues – some of these issues are structural, including the two-headed monster that divides both responsibility and accountability between the city and BPW and resulted in a colossal waste of taxpayer funds fighting lawsuits; the murky, multiple registrations required to vote for city and BPW officials; and the fact that campaign contributions are not public record.
There are also issues related to management, including lack of clear and concise communications from the city and reliance on outside consultants – don’t we at least deserve a city solicitor that works solely for the city and not for a law firm that also represents developers?
Finally, and perhaps most serious, are the issues resulting from lack of vision and leadership. These are evidenced by zoning decisions that do not advance the needs and desires of the community as expressed in the comprehensive plan. Remember the Lewes Dairy property rezoned to residential use, thereby restricting new economic development initiatives coming from both the University of Delaware and offshore wind industry? Allowing the Fourth Street Forest, which is basically a wetland, to be developed at all? The Fisher’s Cove debacle? Why does the city continue to buckle to developers? Why is this done behind closed doors? Why do we continue to give away our precious resources so cheaply?
Lewes needs better. It needs change and, in this case, change means leadership and accountability. Vote for the change we need Saturday, May 14. Vote for Ric Moore.
