Ric Moore has impressive background

May 13, 2022

As a retired state representative of 24 years from northern Delaware and now a 20-plus-year resident of Lewes, I would like to summarize why I am voting for Ric Moore for the mayor's position. I became a friend of Ric when we attempted to preserve the Fourth Street woodlands, described in the 2005 comprehensive plan. We also worked together on several community-based issues that were very controversial beginning 10 to 15 years ago.

I recently learned that a longtime friend of mine and long-serving state Sen. Harris B. Mc Dowell Jr. had met and become equally impressed with Ric when he testified before the Delaware Senate some years back. Sen. McDowell had researched Ric's career in Washington and discovered that Ric's work was highly regarded during his time with the U.S. Department of Energy, much of which was working within the Energy Information Administration and the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

Sen. McDowell established an Oversight Committee for the Delaware Sustainable Energy Utility. He submitted Ric's name for consideration, and he was subsequently appointed by the Office of the Governor. They have the responsibility for educating the public of the importance of alternative and renewable energy sources. This organization is very active doing business as Energize Delaware.

Sen. McDowell and I both found Ric to be very analytical, someone who always looks into the detailed background of issues and does not just glance at the surface info on topics he researches.

Ric's responsibilities as mayor can only be enhanced by his strong links with the Delaware General Assembly. A lot of the funding that City of Lewes has access to comes directly through Dover.

Ric's wife, Kathy Harvatt, spent much of her growing-up years summering here in Lewes and Rehoboth Beach, and her parents were some of the early homeowners to own a property in Shipcarpenter Square. Kathy and Ric both respect the importance of preserving Lewes's history and the improvement of our environment. Most recently, Ric invested his own time and money to recruit a nationally recognized producer of documentary films and has engaged him to record hours of interviews on the history of Lewes – the First Town in the First State. There is a plan for a late-summer 2022 release of that documentary.

The position of mayor is an enormous commitment with little compensation. Ric is retired and has pledged to fully commit his time as Lewes moves forward with a new comprehensive plan and our new council members. Lewes's core values must be observed to maintain our "human scale and quiet nights."
