Roast Carney Day a day in the sun

Organizers urge people to keep pressure on officials to reopen the state
June 4, 2020

Except for a few short speeches and a few jabs at Gov. John Carney, Roast Carney Day turned out to be a day to enjoy music and food.

Sponsored by Delawareans Against Excessive Quarantine, Reopen Delaware and Rob Arlett, the May 31 event at Hudson Fields attracted more than 200 people. The event included music, food and children’s games, occurring one day before restrictions on large gatherings were eased. Starting June 1, gatherings of fewer than 250 people are permitted if all health requirements are followed.

The only obvious sign of protest was that nearly everyone in attendance was not wearing a face covering, in defiance of state and federal health requirements to wear masks in public places when social distancing is not possible.

“We are roasting a pig in Carney’s honor because he is not listening to we, the people,” Arlett said. “We are speaking with one voice that we matter. Reopen Delaware, reopen churches and reopen businesses now. We need to be patient but vigilant, and we need to continue to pray for our state and justice.”

Lisa Marie McCulley, one of the organizers of Delawareans Against Excessive Quarantine, said the event was taking place to draw attention to the message to reopen Delaware, and also to have a day off. “This is a day for the people and young families,” she said.

She urged people to keep pressure on officials to end what she called nonsense orders issued by the governor during the state of emergency.
