Woman, 81, critical, after crash near Red Mill Pond

July 22, 2019

An 81-year-old woman is in critical condition after a crash July 22 on Route 1 near Red Mill Pond.

The crash happened at 12:23 p.m. when a Honda Accord driven by an 81-year-old woman tried to make a lefthand turn onto southbound Route 1 near the Red Mill Center and she failed to yield to northbound traffic, said Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe of the Delaware State Police.

As she tried to cross northbound traffic from the business complex, a Ford Focus traveling north struck the front end of the Honda causing the car to catch fire, Jaffe said. Occupants of both cars exited safely without injury, she said.

A 13-year-old passenger in the Focus was transported to Beebe Healthcare for treatment to her injuries; the 81-year-old was initially transported to Bayhealth Sussex Campus and later transported to Christiana Hospital in critical condition.

After briefly closing Route 1 northbound, officials reopened the road about 1 p.m.
