Royals’ Bell rings in 25 to defeat Sabres

Royals start hot in the ESIAC
December 2, 2021

Delmarva Christian junior Ainsley Bell dropped 25 points, including three from behind the three-point line, in the Royals’ 55-17 win over Sts. Peter & Paul Dec. 1 in Georgetown.

Senior Kaela Mitchell scored 10, grabbed eight rebounds, and made eight steals while dishing off five assists. Senior Sierra Troyer scored 10 points, blocked five shots, and dished off four assists while making three steals. Junior Evelyn Jensen pitched in nine points, grabbed five rebounds and made two blocks.

The Royals started out hot, taking a 13-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 27-5 halftime lead. They didn’t let up in the second half, posting a 28-12 advantage to garner their first ESIAC victory.

“I think that we played with more intensity after halftime,” said head coach Jedidiah Roach. “We missed some easy ones, but we will continue to improve and develop. I'm happy that we were able to get our first win.”

Royals fans were concerned with who would replace last year’s all-state point guard Grace Fetterman, but senior Kaela Mitchell and junior Ainsley Bell filled the potential void.

“Kaela helped us tremendously on the boards and aggressiveness on defense,” said Roach. “We're so blessed to have her this year. She's an extremely hard worker and we haven't seen her best yet. Her teammate Ainsley has put the time in this past summer and it's truly paying off. We need her to be one of the key components of our team this year.”

Senior Sierra Troyer, who reached the 1,000-point plateau in the postseason against Woodbridge, will be looked at to provide senior leadership on the outside and in the paint.

“We definitely have things in mind that we need to work on to prepare for bigger games,” she said. “But it felt great to be on the court with my team since we have already built up a lot of chemistry. I’m really excited for this year.”

The Royals travel to the Gunston School Friday, Dec. 3, while the Sabres travel to the Odyssey Charter School.
