Run for Paws 5K hotter than a husky in Havana

A three-dog race went from start to finish Aug. 4 in Dewey Beach for the 10th Run for the Paws Lucy Crowe Memorial 5K run. It was hotter than a husky in Havana.

Jeff Young, 17:35; Martin Rodriguez, 17:41; and Francisco Puac, 17:49, were separated by just 14 seconds in the front of the pack of 288 runners and a bunch of dogs, many of whom would rather sprint and drink from puddles than jog at the end of a leash. A few small dogs were carried across the finish line, and a 15-year-old Australian Shepherd named Hero was pulled the entire 5K distance in a wagon by his daddy Rick Tedrick with no inclination to jump free.

“He’s earned a free ride,” Rick said.

Trent Sewell, 18:27, and Andrew Garcia, 18:59, completed the top 5 leaderboard.

The top 5 female finishers were Kelly Tingle, 20:48; Julie Sapper, 21:16; Valerie White, 21:35; Janine Valerio, 22:08; and Katie Pokomy, 22:10.

“We had over 400 registered,” said organizer Cheryl Crowe.

“I’m not sure how we lost a hundred runners,” said Race Director Tim Bamforth with a smile. “Maybe they made a wrong turn or took their dogs to the beach.”

Mike Sewell was the male masters winner in 19:30, with Julie Sapper winning the female masters in 21:16.

There were all kinds of dogs in the race, from rescues to purebreds and what some call designer dogs.

An 8-year-old rescued combination Doberman, who according to the owner just loves all people but hates other dogs, was in direct contrast to many humans who are not people friendly but love all dogs.

Proceeds from the race will benefit the SPCA for the care and comfort of local shelter pets.

The 2018 Tunnel to Tower Delmarva 5K run is Sunday, Aug. 12, at 8 a.m., starting at Cape Henlopen High School. Check out seashorestriders.com for full race details.
