You have a visitor.” I knew that designating myself a doctor would annoy the heck out of some of my teacher colleagues. A 15-year-old student said, “Fredman, I didn't know you were a doctor, not that you couldn't be. We have doctors all over the place in this school, but to be honest, many of them don’t seem like no doctors.” I explained the system of degrees and credentialing for doctors from different disciplines, and Kevin said, "The way I look at it, you don’t cut nobody, you ain’t no doctor.” At the Seashore Striders 5-Miler July 12, I was happy to see Dr. Logan Shuttleworth and Dr. Devin Miller, both athletes I have covered since they were 10 years old. Logan has a doctorate in occupational therapy specializing in pelvic health. She works at Triumph. Devin, a doctor of chiropractic medicine, works at First State Health & Wellness with Dr. Trip Delcampo, another Cape lineman.
SoFi Stadium - Located in Inglewood, Calif., SoFi Stadium, a World Cup venue, is the most expensive stadium ever built, exceeding $5 billion. It is 100% privately funded. I just turn on the television and watch games. Being in the middle of those crowds would be my worst nightmare except for maybe a Queen tribute concert at the Freeman Arts Pavilion. Seriously, we live in a sports-crazy world. I used to think the United States had the market cornered on sports obsessions, but it's universal. The 2028 Summer Olympics will be hosted by the City of Los Angeles, and the 2032 summer games will be held in Brisbane, Australia.
Steve Sinko - Steve Sinko, 50, former Saint Mark's and University of Delaware runner, pushes others while racing so they get to feel the wind in their faces. At the Rusty Rudder 5K July 12, he pushed his friend Adrienne because he needed the workout for an upcoming half-marathon. Move 2 Include provides opportunities to anyone with physical or cognitive challenges to participate in local races through the use of an adaptive running chair, Steve said. "That's what we do and why I do it," he said. "It's a way I can give back through something I was half-decent at.” Find Steve on Facebook if you’re interested in participating in his program.
Special Olympics - Christian Partlow, 25, recently won three gold medals at the USA games in Minnesota. He captured gold in the 50 meters, 400 meters and 4-by-100 relay. Beebe employees organized an inside/outsiode parade July 10, for Christian and teammates to celebrate his accomplishments. The parade included a bagpiper – unless the guy was just lost.
Snippets - High school field hockey camp is happening July 13 -16. It begins at 8:30 a.m. at Champions Stadium. There are 30 state championship signs bolted to the back of the bleachers at Champions Stadium just for the sports of field hockey and girls' lacrosse. A pretty impressive-looking venue. Cape took 14 wrestlers to the Noke Wrestling Camp July 9-12 at Roanoke College in Virginia. As reported by coach Chris Mattioni, “The team had six juniors, five sophomores, two freshmen and an eighth-grader. The wrestlers with the most success were Finn Gannon – he was 11-1 – and Ryder Gomez – he was 7-1. Overall, it was a good experience. We had the opportunity to see how the young guys handled tough high school competition. We certainly have a lot of work to do to get this team ready to compete." The team finished with a 5-7 record in dual-meet competition. Austin Guerrieri and Grayson Davis competed at the Junior Nationals in Fargo, N.D. Grayson went 5-2, but was coming off an ankle injury. Austin was 0-2 but had been killing it all summer. Chris Keller, 43, the Cape lacrosse player formerly known as Jeans (he once wore blue jeans in practice), ran 36:24 at the Striders 5-Miler to place second in the 40-44 age group. Trey Mitchell, 32, the Caesar Rodney wrestling coach, posted a time of 36:39 to win the 30-34 age group. Matt Lindell, 45, the Cape cross country coach, ran 36:01 to place third in the 45-49 age group. It looks like a high heat week, so have a hydration plan and don’t walk barefooted on the hot sand. Go on now, git!
