Ruth Ann Marvel, loved being outside

Ruth Ann Marvel, 79, of Dagsboro went home to be with the Lord Friday, Feb. 21, 2020, while surrounded by her loving family at the Delaware Hospice in Milford.

Ruth Ann was born in Dagsboro June 7, 1940, daughter of the late George W. Wingate,Sr. and the late Harriett E. (Murray) Wingate.  She was a graduate of Lord Baltimore High School class of 1958.  Ruth Ann worked as a poultry farmer and also enjoyed working in the cafeteria at the Southern Delaware School of the Arts in Selbyville, retiring in 2014 after 13 years of service.

Ruth Ann was a faithful member of St. George’s United Methodist Church in Clarksville.  She loved being outside working in her yard and cutting the grass.  Ruth Ann also enjoyed taking long walks and riding her bike in Blackwater Village.  Her favorite time of the year, was Christmas as she loved being around her family.  She will be remembered for her contagious laugh, and her love of watching soap operas and the daily news.  

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two husbands, Leon West in 1971 and Stanley E. Marvel in 1996; and a sister, Nancy Steele in 2018.  Ruth Ann is survived by her son, Scott West and his wife Lisa of Millsboro; two stepchildren, Glen Marvel and his wife Duane of Dagsboro, and Vickie O’Hare and her husband Tim of Frankford; a granddaughter, Kristi Rowe and her husband Kevin of Ocean View; two stepgrandchildren, Brandon and Nicole Marvel; two brothers, George Wingate Jr. and his wife, Lois of Dagsboro, and David Wingate and his wife Susan of Dagsboro; a sister, Virginia Rickards and her husband Allan of Ocala, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at noon, Monday, Feb. 24, at the Frankford Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 43 Thatcher St., Frankford, where friends and family may call after 10 a.m. Interment will follow at St. George’s Cemetery in Clarksville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Ruth Ann’s name to St. George’s United Methodist Church, 34281 Omar Road, Frankford, DE 19945, or Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
