Rylie’s Dog Days 5K attracts mostly Delaware runners

September 6, 2018

Rylie’s Dog Days of Summer 5K assembled under the pavilion at American Legion Post 17 in Lewes on Labor Day morning. The race starts and finishes across the way on Massachusetts Avenue and also includes a Kiddie K.

The race belongs to Rylie Maedler, who survived a cancer scare at 7 years old, required serious surgery, then a need for cannabis to control seizures. The website, Ryliessmilefoundation.org will explain a young girl’s focused mission to assist other kids through life crises.

The September sun was in beat-down mode Sept. 3, and the humidity was thicker than a pot of boiling hot dogs steaming under your chin. But the event, light with 140 runners but strong on sponsorship, had a local flavor as 110 runners were from Delaware and everyone there seemed to know people.

Six of the top 10 runners in the 5K were women.

Mike Sewell, 49, was first in 19:26. He was followed by Bethany Killman, 23, 20:31; Emily Sandison, 31, 21:03; David Hume, 46, 21:08; Mardiny Ung, 51, 23:08; Donald McLamb, 45, 23:18; Sean O’Grady, 37, 23:26; Faith Mitchell, 12, 23:29; Katie Kuhlman, 13, 23:33; and Jackie Quigley, 51, 23:38.

Former Philadelphia Flyers enforcer Riley Cote was at the race after having met Rylie Maedler at a cannabis conference. Cote is a longtime hemp devotee and actually has a hemp farm in Pennsylvania. More information on that in the People in Sports column.
