Rylie’s Dog Days of Summer 5K to benefit hospitalized children Sept. 3

August 19, 2018

American Legion Post 17 in Lewes will host the Third Annual Rylie’s Dog Days of Summer 5K and Kiddie K to benefit the Rylie’s Smile Foundation at 8 a.m., Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3, at 113 American Legion Road, Lewes.

Rylie’s Smile Foundation is named after Rylie Maedler, now 12, who endured extensive surgery and rehabilitation following an aggressive bone tumor diagnosis at age 7, and later, a seizure disorder. The foundation provides Apple devices to any child who is medically fragile and spending a significant amount of time in the hospital.

After her initial diagnosis, Rylie began to experience seizures. Working with specialists, she received and has had success with an alternative medication. Rylie’s Law was passed in 2015 and benefitted other children with similar conditions. Today, Rylie and her mother are involved with international research and advocacy addressing pediatric use of medical cannabis.

Rylie’s mother Janie Maedler thanks all sponsors including American Legion Post 17, Funland, Paws for People, ACTIV Pest Solutions, jCanna.com, Ronald McDonald House Delaware, Red Sun Customs, Races2Run, Nova Timing, JD Shuckers, The Fresh Market, Rehoboth Sunrise Rotary and many others who have supported the cause. Special thanks go to local and state legislators, especially Sen. Ernie Lopez.
