It pains me to see how business in Sussex County has become so poisoned by partisan politics. I speak to the recent issue wherein Mark Schaeffer viciously attacked the character of a sitting councilman, John Rieley, in a way and manner unbecoming anyone with any sense of integrity and credibility. For the record, I do not know Mr. Rieley, have never met the man, and know little to nothing about his abilities and character. What I do know from observing the circumstances and listening to the record of the proceedings is that Mr. Schaeffer was way out of line in his words and actions for someone who is supposed to represent District 3 as a dignified Sussex County councilman.
The issue presented with a distinct sense of vengeance and disdain of Mr. Rieley by Mr. Schaeffer may well have some merit, but there is a right way and a wrong way to raise the issue. One can only assume Mr. Schaeffer’s words and actions were motivated by a deep-rooted desire to see that Mr. Rieley is perceived as an unworthy candidate for the same council seat from a different district as that which Mr. Schaeffer presently holds.
Apparently, Mr. Schaeffer has caught the same disease that is so prevalent in our nation’s politics. If my disappointment in Mr. Schaeffer and his recent words and actions has not registered with you by now, please re-read this letter. In concluding, Mr. Schaeffer, “You owe Mr. Rieley, Council President Vincent, and the folks of Sussex County a heartfelt apology for your vicious and unprovoked attack on Mr. Rieley’s character. In the meantime, I pledge to you the support of Sussex County to hold you accountable for your words, acts, actions and, yes, votes during your remaining tenure on Sussex County Council.”
