Scooter driver in critical condition after Fenwick Island crash

July 16, 2021

A Selbyville man is in critical condition following a July 15 scooter crash in Fenwick Island.

The 70-year-old man was riding a 2004 Yamaha Scooter at 12:14 p.m. going eastbound on the shoulder of Lighthouse Road approaching the entrance of the Fenwick Hardware Store when a 2007 Chevrolet Express Van operated by a 64-year-old Selbyville man stopped westbound on Lighthouse Road tried to make a left turn into the parking lot, said Master Cpl. Heather Pepper of the Delaware State Police.

The operator of the Chevrolet failed to see the scooter, and the front of the Chevrolet impacted the left side of the scooter in the eastbound shoulder, Pepper said. After impact, she said, the scooter driver was ejected from the vehicle and landed in the parking lot of the Fenwick Hardware Store. Immediately after impact, she said, the Chevrolet came to a controlled stop in the middle of the eastbound lane and eastbound shoulder. The scooter came to rest in the hardware store parking lot.

The operator of the Chevrolet was properly restrained and was not injured. The operator of the scooter sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to an area hospital in critical condition.

The eastbound lane and eastbound shoulder of Lighthouse Road were shut down for about one hour while the investigation was conducted by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit. Anyone with information regarding the collision should contact Master Cpl. Kenneth Argo by calling 302-644-5020.
