SDARJ town hall to discuss reparations Nov. 15

November 5, 2022

The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice will host a thought-provoking discussion, Let’s Talk About Reparations, at a virtual town hall meeting set for 7 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 15.

SDARJ and the YWCA-DE Racial and Social Justice Program are collaborating on a two-part discussion of reparations, focusing on the harm resulting from slavery in the United States.

In common usage, the term reparations refers to the act or process of making amends for a wrong.

According to the United Nations, adequate, effective and prompt reparation is intended to promote justice by redressing gross violations of international human rights law or serious violations of international humanitarian law.

Part one of the discussion will center on the YWCA-DE’s pre-recorded program titled Let’s Talk About Reparations, moderated by Becca Cotto, YWCA-DE Racial and Social Justice program director. The recording features Eugene Young, former executive director of the Metropolitan Urban League of Wilmington; Javonne Rich, ACLU Delaware policy and advocacy director; and Logan Herring, CEO of the WRK Group, a collective of three nonprofits revitalizing the Riverside and Northeast Wilmington neighborhoods.

Part two will be held Tuesday, Dec. 13, with a live panel discussion of practical approaches to reparations, as well as opportunities for the audience to share their thoughts and ideas on the issue.
