A Seaford man, 19, faces a murder charge in connection with a Bridgeville shooting in August.
Police began investigating Aug. 8 after a man was shot about 1 a.m. at The Woodshed Bar and Package store, 22588 Bridgeville Highway, said Master Cpl. Heather Pepper of the Delaware State Police.
Police learned Unique Smith shot another man, Jeffrey L. Akins Jr., 28, in the back. Akins was taken to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Pepper said. His body was turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science for an autopsy, which determined his death was a homicide sustained from a single gunshot wound to the back, Pepper said.
Police identified Smith as a suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest. On Sept. 21, Pepper said, Smith was located and arrested at an apartment complex in Salisbury, Md., by the U.S. Marshals Task Force, and he is currently in custody in Maryland and awaiting extradition to Delaware. Smith faces charges of first-degree murder, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, and third-degree assault.
