Senator López: Vote to re-elect I.G. Burton

August 28, 2020

Just a few days ago, I cast and mailed an absentee ballot to re-elect Sussex County Councilman I.G. Burton.  With primary day Sept. 15 registered Republicans have the opportunity to re-elect a responsible and responsive leader.  They can do this safely through the mail by requesting an absentee ballot from the Sussex County Department of Elections or vote in person Sept. 15 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at their designated polling location.   If voters have questions as to where that location may be or about requesting an absentee ballot, they may call the elections department at 302-856-5367.

Friends, no member of Sussex County Council works harder for their constituents than I.G. Burton.  His diligence and dedication along with his collaborative and thoughtful approach to problem solving have been hallmarks of his successful first term.  I.G. Burton understands the importance of working together with elected officials at the federal, state and municipal levels to leverage resources in order to achieve meaningful results for taxpayers in eastern Sussex County.

A successful example of Councilman Burton’s emphasis on collaboration was the 2018 announcement of a $7.5 million U.S. Department of Transportation TIGER grant awarded for improvements to the intersection of Sand Hill Road, Route 9 and Airport Road.  This grant, the first of its kind awarded to a transportation project in Delaware, would not have occurred without the collaborative work done by DelDOT, our federal congressional delegation and I.G. Burton along with his fellow councilmembers.  This location, which includes the Georgetown CHEER Center, Sussex Academy, the main entrance to the Delaware Coastal Airport and now, the soon-to-be-opened Sandhill Fields, is a critically important intersection that required attention geared toward enhancing safety.  Now, thanks to I.G. Burton and all of us working together, that attention is being paid.

Collaboration and compromise don’t mean giving up on your principles.   If anything, I need more of my fellow elected officials to be willing to put aside their differences, work together and collaborate in order to create substantive improvements for our area.  I.G. Burton understands this, and in these politically divisive times has kept his focus, not on negative attacks but on the people he took an oath to serve, with an eye toward the future of this county and the preservation of its historic and natural beauty.

Finding balance is never easy, but no one has done more for their constituents to find the right balance to protect individual freedom, enhance public safety and improve our quality of life than Councilman I.G. Burton.   For that reason and many more, I enthusiastically ask my fellow Republicans in the Cape Region to join me in casting a vote to re-elect Councilman I.G. Burton in the Sept. 15 Republican primary.

Dr. Ernesto B. “Ernie” López
Delaware Senate
