Serving on a Lightship presentation set Nov. 10 in Lewes

The Overfalls Foundation will present Serving on a Lightship at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 10, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church parish hall in Lewes. Frank Manning will describe life on a lightship. Manning served in the United States Coast Guard and was stationed on the Lightship Delaware, WLV 529, from October 1964 to September 1965. He will share with attendees such topics as off-duty responsibilities and how downtime was spent, ferry service to and from the lightship, emergency drills, wildlife, the dangers during resupply, and more insights on lightship life.

Born and raised in Chicago, Manning enlisted in the Coast Guard in July 1964. After serving on Lightship Delaware, he was assigned to the USCG Training Center, Groton, Conn., from September 1965 to March 1966. He was then transferred to USCG Base St. George, Staten Island, N.Y., from March 1966 to July 1968. After active duty, Manning served in the USCG Reserves until his honorable discharge July 31, 1970.
