Sewing day for Quilts of Valor block drive set Feb. 1

January 16, 2020

The Quilts of Valor Foundation, a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to cover service members and veterans in comforting and healing Quilts of Valor, will hold its annual block drive Saturday, Feb. 1. In Sussex County, the sewing day will run from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at  the Mason Dixon VFW Post 7234,  29265 Marshy Hope Way, Ocean View. Participants supply their own machines and basic sewing supplies. Block kits are provided.

The goal of this drive is for volunteers to create blocks for future Quilts of Valor. In 2019, a total of 33,375 quilts were awarded to service member and veterans across the United States. Many more are still waiting for quilts because quilters can’t keep up with the demand.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation has sent a goal of collecting 20,000 blocks in 2020 – that would be enough to create over 400 quilts. While that would not eliminate the backlog of requests, it would go a long way toward getting more service members and veterans a Quilt of Valor.

Breakfast goodies and beverages will be available. Lunch can be purchased at the VFW or attendees can bring their own. Desserts will be provided and door prizes will be awarded hourly. To sign up, contact Dana Mason at dana.mason@qovf.org or 302-448-9111, or Marguerite Niemoeller at marguerite.niemoeller@qovf.org or 240-498-3185.
