Shields second-graders learn about public safety

May 29, 2019

Shields Elementary School recently held its Annual Injury Prevention and Public Safety Day for second-grade students. Beebe Physician’s Assistant Andrew Fitzkee has been coordinating the event since its inception seven years ago.

Students spent about 10 minutes with each participating organization to learn about how they keep area communities safe. They tried out the Seatbelt Convincer with the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, met with team members from Beebe’s Emergency Room staff, viewed the LifeNET 64 and DSP Trooper 2 helicopters, and heard presentations from Sussex County Paramedics, Lewes Fire Department ambulance crews, and Cape Henlopen State Park beach patrol.

Students finished their Safety Day by enjoying a police K9 demonstration from the units supporting Delaware State Police, Dover Police Department, and Smyrna Police Department.
